Then he left with wife Rae to pursue their dream of living in Hana.
On Thanksgiving night of this year, Carl “Link” and Rae Lindquist were lost in a tragic accident when, on their way home from dinner at the Hotel Hana-Maui, their van was swept downstream to the sea by storm-swollen waters.
While family and friends were shocked and grieved, it was somehow comforting to know that they had gone together. Link and Rae had been sweethearts since high school days.
Link, of course, later went on to become president of Trade Publishing. More importantly, he became the soul and guiding light of our company and of this magazine.
He started his career at Trade selling subscriptions when founder Don Over hired him in 1959. By 1964 he had become both sales manager and editor, a tricky combination of responsibilities that Link managed to handle with effectiveness, integrity – and humor.
In 1973, Link became Trade’s president, ushering in a decade of development during which time he built our reputation as a leading provider of industry information while also becoming the driving force behind a number of cultural events, many focused on the community of Hana.
He is remembered for organizing the first Hana Music Festival. He co-published “Manna-Mana,” a book of nearly 200 collected works of Hawaiian creativity. He also spearheaded the careful restoration of Huialoha Church at Kaupo, built in the 1800s and reopened in 1978.
And while the industry was enjoying his ongoing practical jokes with Don Over, Link was also taking care of business, earning a reputation as a marketing leader. In 1977, the Hawaii Advertising Federation recognized him with its top award, the Silver Medal. To this day, Link remains one of the few non-ad-agency individuals to have received this award.
Later, there will be time for perspective. For now, it is good to simply remember Link and Rae for being the wonderful people that they were and for the legacy they have passed on to the rest of us.
