On Nov. 18 the City & County of Honolulu held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new entrance to Honolulu Zoo. Mayor Mufi Hannemann and other city officials attended the event.
According to the city, the entrance falls in line with the zoo master plan, calling for an entrance that is more visible and closer to the parking lot.
The project includes the creation of multiple ticket lines to accommodate visitors and a 2,000-square-foot gift shop. The existing information kiosk at the corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua avenues will be demolished and replaced with a low wall ground sign that identifies Kapiolani Park and the zoo. The parking lot is slated for repaving in 2011, in time for the completion of the new entrance.
The city reports that the cost of the project is $3.26 million.
“This is another in a series of projects we’ve completed or begun for the Honolulu Zoo,” said Mayor Hannemann at the ceremony. “The orangutan home for Rusti and Violet, veterinary clinic, Keiki Zoo, learning center, and now the new entrance demonstrate the commitment we’ve made to ensuring the success of one of Honolulu’s premier attractions for residents and visitors of all ages.”
