Kiewit Companies in Hawaii – which includes Kiewit Building Group and Kiewit Pacific Co. and is led by Lance Wilhelm, company vice president – was named the 2010 Outstanding Union Builder by the Hawaii Carpenters Union (HCU) in an annual reception hosted by the Pacific Resource Partnership (PRP) on Jan. 12 at the Oahu Country Club.

The honor is given annually to a contractor that has made exceptional contributions to union construction and labor-management relations in Hawaii.

“The Kiewit Companies are proud and honored to receive this prestigious award from the Hawaii Carpenters Union,” says Wilhelm. “Kiewit has been constructing roads, bridges and buildings for over 25 years in the local community, and we take great pride in the relationships we’ve created throughout the years.”

The companies’ project portfolio includes H-3 Freeway, Tripler Army Medical Center, Keck II Observatory on the Big Island and the new Trump International Hotel Waikiki Beach Walk (with joint venture partner Albert C. Kobayashi, Inc.)
“It is, however, the latest contract coming from the City & County of Honolulu for $483 million that is the biggest ever for (Kiewit) in Hawaii,” adds Ron Taketa, financial secretary and business representative for HCU. “And perhaps the ultimate tribute to the company’s development as an established leader in Hawaii’s construction industry … would be the groundbreaking first phase of the Honolulu rail transit system … that will begin to revolutionize public transportation on the island.”
Kyle Chock, executive director of PRP, concludes, “The Kiewit Companies exemplify the qualities that are found in industry leaders – they have the innovation, expertise and dedication to produce outstanding work, and have shown their commitment toward improving the quality of life for the people of Hawaii. Because of their determination and drive, they have continued to succeed even in this tough economy.”
