AIA Hosts Successful
Architecture Month

David Bylund of Architects Hawaii moderated a panel discussion about sustainable design in Hawaii.

The Honolulu chapter of the American Institute of Architects held a number of events in April to celebrate the profession’s annual Architecture Month. Many were free and open to all AIA members and the general public.
Event highlights included:

• Family Sunday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, for which architects designed a mini putt-putt course on the front lawn of the museum and led children in a number of design projects including tea paintings inspired by Alice in Wonderland

• volunteering for the pledge drive to benefit Hawaii Public Radio

• a free Francis D.K. Ching lecture titled “Seeing, Thinking, Drawing” at the University of Hawaii School of Architecture auditorium — Ching, author and professor emeritus of the University of Washington discussed the relationship between traditional and emerging digital methods of drawing and design, while emphasizing the continuing relevance of free-hand drawing for architects. Ching also was featured at a design workshop held at Honolulu Academy Museum of Arts.

• free architectural walking tours of downtown Honolulu, an event that drew 180 people

•“Build Green” panel discussion moderated by David Bylund, AIA, of Architects Hawaii, Ltd.; panelists included Steve Meder, University of Hawaii; Mark Ayers, AIA, Ferraro Choi & Associates, Ltd.; Matthew Goyke, AIA, Green Sand, Inc.; Race Randle, Forest City Hawaii; and Matthew Pennaz, Long & Associates AIA Inc. The event was held at the Honolulu Design Center Cupola Theater

• design studio open house, colloquially known as the “Firm Crawl” — an event that attracted about 80 people who visited seven architectural firms in downtown to see what projects the firms had done and meet the people behind the creativity; participating firms were Eight Inc., Group 70 International, Mason Architects, M5 Architecture, Next Design, RIM Architects and WATG.

More than 60 people attended the panel discussion.
