Design Excellence Recognized

The American Institute of Architects, Honolulu chapter (AIA Honolulu), hosted its 52nd annual Design Awards on July 29 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.
Held annually since 1958, the design competition recognizes the year’s best in built and unbuilt architectural projects.
“Submissions utilized the latest technological advances to the fullest, yet remained wonderfully humane to the user. This delicate balancing act is just one of the achievements we celebrate with our members in the Design Awards this year,” said Charles Kaneshiro, 2010 AIA Honolulu president.
The following projects and architects were recognized:
Awards of Excellence
• Hanahauoli School Poe Classroom and Administration Building — architect: Lorrin Matsunaga, AIA, of Urban Works; contractor: S & M Sakamoto, Inc. (with casework by J. Kadowaki, Inc.)
• Hawaii Preparatory Academy Energy Laboratory — architect: David Croteau, AIA, of Flansburgh Architects; contractor: Quality Builders, Inc.
This project also received the Jack C. Lipman AIA Members’ Choice Award, determined by the approximately 800 members of AIA Honolulu. The recipient of the award is recognized as having achieved an outstanding level of design appropriate to the climate and culture of Hawaii.
• Juliet Wichman Botanical Research Center — architect: Dean Sakamoto, FAIA, of Dean Sakamoto Architects; contractor: Unlimited Construction Services, Inc.

Intended as a living example of sustainable architecture, the Hawaii Preparatory Academy Energy Lab
is a zero net-energy building powered entirely by alternative means, including the use of photovoltaics.

• Kuhio Park Terrace and Kuhio Park Housing (unbuilt) — architect Francis Oda, FAIA, of Group 70 International
This project also earned the Mayor’s Choice Award, which was selected by former Mayor Mufi Hannemann from among all entries.

Fourth Annual People’s Choice Award

• Hawaii Carpenters Union Training Center — architect Maurice Yamasato, AIA, of Yamasato, Fujiwara, Higa & Associates; contractor: Maryl Pacific Construction, Inc.
The People’s Choice Award allowed the general public to determine its favorite of 46 distinguished entrants in the completed projects category. Voting was conducted online through the AIA Honolulu web site.
All other awards were determined by a jury composed of AIA member-architects and other design professionals. Jurors this year were Russell Chung, FASLA, LEED AP, EVP of PBR Hawaii and Associates; James Freeman, AIA; Kelly Irvine, AIA of Collaborative Studio; and Kris Palagi, Associate AIA, of the University of Hawaii School of Architecture and Cogent Designs.

The new $25 million Hawaii Carpenters Union Training Center, which opened in May 2009,
houses a 25,000-square-foot training studio and wood shop along with a banquet room,
several classrooms (including a computer lab), kitchen area and administrative space.
