The Department of Land and Natural Resources held a groundbreaking ceremony on July 28 for two new projects at Keehi Small Boat Harbor, both of which will be built by American Marine Corp. The two new docks will replace Piers 600, 900 and 1000, all of which are badly deteriorated.

Pier 600 was demolished earlier and will be replaced. The existing Piers 900 and 1000 will be demolished as part of this project and replaced by a new Pier 900.

The new floating dock systems will be built of marine-grade aluminum frames topped with plastic composite decking. They will be anchored by an elastic mooring system with concrete blocks, called helical anchors. They have a life expectancy of more than 30 years.

The dock system includes an 8 to 12-foot wide main pier with finger piers on both sides. The finger piers will be 30 feet long at Pier 600 and 50 feet long at Pier 900. All will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Amenities of the new dock include dock boxes, modular power pedestals (electrical), potable water, fire protection and optional cable and telephone service.

When completed in 2011, the new 600 and 900 piers will provide 44 and 32 new slips respectively.
The $2.8 million project was designed by Sato and Associates, Inc.

“The improvements to this small boat harbor facility and many others around the state will help ensure our residents and visitors can enjoy safe and easy access to the ocean,” says Gov. Linda Lingle.

Completed Dock Dedicated

The Department of Land and Natural Resources also dedicated a new dock at Keehi Small Boat Harbor on July 28.
Built to ADA standards, the new $2.52 million Pier 100 is an engineered aluminum-framed dock system, consisting of a 6-foot wide main pier with 28 to 40-foot long finger piers on both sides of the main pier. The corrosion-resistant aluminum frames sit on new concrete pile caps and pile foundations. The frame itself is topped with fiber-reinforced plastic grating.

The project adds 20 slips to the harbor’s inventory. Dock installation began in December 2009. American Marine Corp. was the general contractor.
