Kahuku Wind Project Breaks Ground

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on July 13 for the 12-turbine, 30-megawatt Kahuku Wind project. Once completed, it will be the only wind energy project on Oahu and one of the largest in the state.
The wind farm is being built by a subsidiary of Massachusetts-based First Wind. Hawaiian Electric Co. (HECO) will purchase as-available renewable energy.
“With long-term pricing delinked from the cost of oil, this new source of renewable energy is a step toward breaking our vulnerability to the fluctuating price of oil and increasing our energy security,” says Dick Rosenblum, HECO president and CEO.
The Kahuku Wind project will provide employment opportunities, as well as support for the Hawaiian Clean Energy Initiative.
It will generate enough energy to reduce oil consumption, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and power nearly 8,000 homes each year, according to the Energy Information Administration of the Department of Energy.
The project is expected to be in operation in early 2011.

City Awards Design Contract

The City & County of Honolulu has awarded a $5.5 million design contract for three rail transit stations to HDR/Hawaii Pacific Engineers.
The contract advances the designs of the West Loch, Waipahu Transit Center and Leeward Community College stations along Farrington Highway.
“We look forward to working with our partner to ensure the rail stations are easy to use, with attractive designs that embody the spirit of our communities,” says Kirk Caldwell, acting mayor.
Lester Fukuka of the firm’s Honolulu office will serve as principal consultant.
