Maui and Big Isle Get Top Awards

Contracts awarded for August fell a dramatic $91 million in value compared to last year. The main difference was the huge Navy award in 2008 to Watts Constructors of $84.8 million for submarine pier facilities. Otherwise, awards are about the same for the month but the loss of that Pearl Harbor work leaves the 2009 YTD total down 17.6 percent at $476,349,152.

This is not a problem for Maui Master Builders who took the state’s top award of $4.7 million for Molokai Airport work nor for Honolulu Builders who were awarded $4.1 million for Public Safety Facilities work on the Big Island.

With four months of awards still to be reported, there’s still reason to expect a respectable total by year’s end.
