Building Homes For Families In Need

During the sixth annual Build-a-Thon on Aug. 14 and 15, the nonprofit organization Honolulu Habitat for Humanity coordinated a volunteer effort to construct new homes for low-income families across the state.
With the support of more than 1,000 volunteers, this year’s Build-a-Thon helped 14 families achieve their dream of homeownership and raised funds to help eliminate substandard housing.
This year, volunteer teams included employees from Hunt Building Co., AES Hawaii, Envision Network Solutions, Oceanic Time Warner Cable, Mega Construction, Kapolei Realty and HTH Corp.
Honolulu Habitat says families participating in the program are called “partner families” because they invest hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” into the building of their homes and the homes of others. Their monthly home payments are returned to the organization’s Fund For Humanity and used to build more homes.
