State Brings Off-Road
Excitement to Oahu

In August, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for Sandbox Hawaii, Oahu’s first legal, off-road venue for sport vehicles such as dirt bikes and four-wheel-drive trucks. The 32-acre waterfront park off of Sand Island is the result of a partnership between the Department of Land and Natural Resources and a nonprofit organization called the Sand Island Off-Highway Vehicle Association.

According to the state, which often deals with the destruction from illegal off-road vehicles, the $20,000 project should be completed by the end of the year. Features of the project include a BMX track; a pee-wee motor-cross track; a track for remote-control cars; a 4 x 4 truck course; and an ATV course that will cover 2.5 acres.

During the event, Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona offered his support for the project. He believes Sandbox Hawaii will encourage off-road vehicle users in Hawaii to ride responsibly and legally, as well as be good ambassadors for their sport.
