Waimalu Sewer Work Begins
General contractor Frank Coluccio Construction Co. recently began work on the $45 million Waimalu sewer rehabilitation/reconstruction project for the City & County of Honolulu. The scope of work includes the replacement/rehabilitation of approximately 6,200 feet of sewer pipe by traditional open trench evacuation, microtunneling and slip-line methods. Most of the sewer lines were constructed in the mid-to-late 1950s and are in poor condition due to ground settlement.
“We’re fulfilling our promise to repair our sewer system and wastewater treatment plants with these major capital investments,” says Mayor Mufi Hannemann. “Projects like these are constructed with the money collected in sewer fees, and this one in particular is benefiting from federal stimulus funding.”
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provided $7.4 million.
The streets affected are mauka of the Waimalu Shopping Center and include Hekaha Street, Lokowai, Olepe Loop, Lii Ipo Street and Kanunu Street.
Work will take place during the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday (except holidays). The project is expected to take 27 months to complete.
